splitwise daily limit

The free limit is four expenses a day

That number comes from Splitwise's own help centre. Here is what the limit does, the ways out Splitwise itself offers, and how to carry on if you are in the middle of a trip.

What Splitwise's own pages say

The limit is real and Splitwise documents it:

Splitwise has introduced a daily expense limit for our free tier.

feedback.splitwise.com

That article never says how many. The number is one line further in, on the help centre page about Pro:

Unlimited expenses: Add as many expenses as you need without hitting a limit (free users can add up to 4 expenses each day).

kb.splitwise.com

Four, not three. The three that circulates comes from ranking blogs, not from Splitwise.

Two more things their pages do not tell you. They never say what time the count resets, only that it does. And they never say whether the limit counts expenses you added or expenses added to your groups. So if you have hit it and want to know exactly when you can add again, nobody outside Splitwise can tell you.

The three ways out that Splitwise itself offers

One of these is free and takes a second, so they are worth knowing before you move anything.

Straight from their help pages

  • Wait, or hand the expense to a friendTheir words: "you can add more expenses as soon as the daily limit resets, or ask a friend to add the expenses on your behalf." Your friend adds it as paid by you. If one person in the group is doing all the entering, spreading it around gets you past four.
  • Someone in the group may already hold a Trip Pass"Our new yearly plans come with one annual Trip Pass, which can be applied to any trip group of your choosing and grants Pro features to group members for 30 days." If anyone on the trip has an annual plan, ask. It covers the group for a month.
  • Pay"You can subscribe to Splitwise Pro to immediately remove the daily limit." Splitwise lists this one first.

About the price, and about the ads

Splitwise does not publish a price for Pro. Not on the Pro page, not at checkout before you sign in, not in the help centre. What their terms say is why:

The price at which Splitwise Pro is offered may vary due to date of subscription, country, local taxes and regulations, promotions, and Splitwise reserves the right to change the price and subscription benefits at its sole discretion.

splitwise.com/terms

Their help centre lists three plan shapes: "Individual + Trip Pass (annual subscription)", "Duo + Trip Pass (annual subscription)" and a "Monthly subscription", with no figures against any of them. So the specific amounts you find in blog posts are somebody's screenshot of somebody's country on some past date. Yours appears at checkout.

Their own pages say three things about ads. The Pro page sells "A totally ad-free experience". The help centre article about the limit says they are committed to running the product "without violating user privacy, selling data to marketers, or blanketing our apps with spammy ads." Their terms describe Pro as including "reduced advertisements." Read together: the free app carries ads, Pro removes them, and Splitwise's own position is that it keeps them light. Anything more specific than that is not something they have written down.

Moving your group mid-trip

You do not have to reconstruct the holiday. Splitwise's spreadsheet export can become a new room.

A few minutes, then one link in the group chat

  1. Export the Splitwise group

Open the group settings on splitwise.com and choose "Export as spreadsheet." That gives you the CSV the importer reads.
  2. Import and review

Open the import page, drop in the CSV, pick the room currency and your name, then read any warnings before creating the room.
  3. Paste the new link in the chat

Everyone can add to the room from the moment the link is there. No app store and no signup. Keep the link pinned: it is the key.
  4. Carry on

From here nothing is counted. Add the taxi at the moment you pay for it.

Be clear-eyed about what stays behind. Receipt photos do not come across, and the importer flags any row it cannot read before it creates the room. Leave the Splitwise group in place until everyone agrees the balances match.

When Splitwise is the better tool

Most people never see the limit. If your group adds an expense or two a day, the cap is not your problem, and moving costs you a history you already have.

Splitwise also has things Split has no version of: receipt scanning, spending charts, search across old bills, and card import in the countries where it runs. A group that wants any of those should stay.

Good to know

Split is free forever, with nothing to upgrade to. Peanut makes it to introduce people to Peanut, which is how Split gets paid for. There is no paid tier, so there is no number to throttle.

Split does not move money and cannot check whether anyone paid. It nets the debts down to a short payment plan, then two people settle however they settle, by cash or a local transfer or whatever both can actually use, and one of them taps to record it. No bank sits behind us confirming that.

Add the fifth expense

Import the group, check the balances, and paste the new room link in the chat. No cap and no account.

Questions

How many expenses can I add to Splitwise for free?
Four a day. Splitwise's help centre says free users can add up to 4 expenses each day, and it is the only Splitwise page that gives a number at all.
How much does Splitwise Pro cost?
Splitwise does not publish a price on its own site. Its terms say the price may vary due to date of subscription, country, local taxes and regulations, promotions. Your own figure appears at checkout once you have signed in, which is why no two write-ups elsewhere agree.
Does a Split room have a daily limit?
No. No cap on expenses, no ads, and no paid tier to upgrade to. Nothing counts what you add, so a whole week of receipts in one sitting works the same way one dinner does.
Can I move my group over in the middle of a trip?
Yes. Export the Splitwise group as a spreadsheet, import the CSV into a new Split room, check the warnings and balances, then send the new room link to the group. Leave the old group in place until everyone agrees the balances match.
