Settle Up's homepage describes its expense tracking:
Settle Up keeps track of your gang's expenses – great for travellers, flatmates, couples and others.
Its privacy policy says group members can access the following information:
Other users who are in the same group(s) as you can access your: Name, Email, Profile picture(s), Transaction & other data you enter into the app
In Split, members enter a display name. Anyone with the room link can access the room, so share it only with the group.
Settle Up also advertises browser access for viewing balances:
No app required: Share a group link so friends can view the balance in their browser without downloading anything.
Split's room link lets people add expenses as well as view balances without creating an account.
Offline use
Settle Up's App Store listing says:
No internet? No problem — it works offline and syncs when you're back.
In Split, opening a room for the first time needs a connection. After that, new expenses can wait on your device and send when you reconnect. Editing expenses and recording payments need a connection. If broader offline use is important, check Settle Up's features against the tasks your group needs.
Moving an existing group
Split does not import Settle Up files directly. You can re-enter outstanding expenses and their shares manually, then check that the balances match. Keep the original group for its history.
Starting at the end of a trip or billing period avoids maintaining two overlapping sets of expenses.
Payment plans
Settle Up explains why a suggested payment might go to someone you did not originally owe:
It minimizes the number of transactions between people by transferring debts, so you might end up paying to somebody you don't directly owe.
Split also combines debts into a short payment plan. Pay each other by an agreed method, then record the payment. Split does not move money or verify it with a bank.
When Settle Up may suit you better
If your group already uses Settle Up and wants to keep its history and account-based access, there may be no reason to move. Split is useful when everyone wants to enter expenses in a browser without signing up.
