How to split an Airbnb cost when rooms differ

If one bedroom has a private bathroom and another is a sofa bed, you can charge different amounts. Agree a weight for each room, then divide the accommodation cost in proportion to those weights.

Agree and record the split

  1. Choose room weights before booking

    Use the room size, bed and amenities to agree the differences. These are your group's choices; there is no standard set of weights.

  2. Calculate each room's share

    Divide its weight by the sum of all weights, then multiply by the accommodation cost.

  3. Add the booking to Split

    Record who paid and enter each person's agreed amount. Share the room link so everyone can check it.

A worked example

Suppose four rooms have weights of 1.4, 1.0, 1.0 and 0.6. The weights total 4.0, so their shares are 35%, 25%, 25% and 15%. These percentages add up to 100%.

If two people share the room with a 35% share, they could pay 17.5% each. If you prefer to charge per person, assign each person a weight instead. Keep the two approaches separate when you calculate.

You can split cleaning and service fees equally per person as a separate expense. Agree whether fees belong in the weighted amount before doing the calculation.

When an equal split is enough

Similar rooms may not need different prices. If everyone is happy with their room and the same share, an equal split is easier.
