Splitwise vs Settle Up: features and limits
Compare Splitwise and Settle Up on paid features, offline use, currency conversion and imports, with links to their documentation and practical limits.
Splitwise Pro is worth considering if you need receipt scanning and expense search. Settle Up lists offline use and lets you edit exchange rates. Offline use and exchange rates
Settle Up's App Store description says it works offline and syncs after reconnecting. That is useful to check if your trip will include places with poor reception.
Settle Up lets you edit the exchange rate or converted amount. Later transactions use the edited rate until you switch back to the current rate. Its official tips explain the setting.

Suggested debts and actual payments
Settle Up allows debt minimisation to be turned off in group settings. With it on, the suggested payee can differ from the person who paid for the original expense. Source: Settle Up tips. This worked example explains the calculation.
Recording a payment and sending money are different actions. Splitwise supports recording payments made elsewhere and offers payment methods such as Splitwise Pay and Pay by Bank in supported countries. Check the options available to your group in the Splitwise setup guide.
Moving from Splitwise to Settle Up
Settle Up documents an import of group members and their current balances. Export from the Splitwise web app, then import while creating a Settle Up group. The instructions do not promise a full expense-history import. Keep the original export and check what arrived before relying on the new group.
If your current app already meets the group's needs, keeping it avoids asking everyone to move.
When a browser room is enough
Peanut Split is an option for a group that wants to add expenses through a shared link. Anyone with the link can open the room and add to it. There is no account or required app-store install; adding Split to a device is optional. Save the link, because there is no login or password recovery.
Pay by your chosen method outside Split, then record it in the room. Split does not send money or verify payments with a bank. If you need to request payment, these message examples give you a starting point.
